Leading Authentically

Updated: Mar 28

"Everyone has the chance to lead if they choose to take what they've been given and make something extraordinary happen." ~James M. Kouzes & Barry Z. Posner

Wherever you are in your career, whatever circles you run in, you have an opportunity to lead and influence. Sometimes we feel like we need to revisit our leadership approach. Maybe it's because of a change, something you learned, or feeling like you are off course. You might have a desire to reinvent yourself in a different phase of your career or life. Maybe in trying to fit in, or people please you've given up a part of yourself and want to reclaim it. Or you may just want to be crystal clear in your approach so no energy or effort is wasted rethinking or being inconsistent.

It starts with you, your values, strengths and experiences, what you care about, and how you hold yourself accountable. Being authentic to who you are at your core reinforces the work you do, brings meaning to it, and becomes an example for others to follow. You may revisit or take assessments like Meyers Briggs or DiSC to determine how you naturally lead or approach things, and how flexible, adaptable or resilient you are when the situation calls for it. You might be aware of knowledge or skill gaps that you want to address. Think also about what support you need, whether that is building a mastermind group, or finding an advocate, coach or mentor.

  • Self-assessment - what do you know about yourself?

  • Understand your natural leadership style and how to adapt

  • Determine how you want to address any gaps

  • Engage your support system

The need for strong leaders is always present. Being clear about who you are and what you stand for allows you to lead courageously and with integrity.
